Patrick obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Montana and graduated from Gonzaga University Law School, with honors, in 1978. He was admitted to the State Bar of Montana in October 1978, and is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Montana. Prior to starting this firm, Patrick served as Chief Deputy County Attorney for the City and County of Butte-Silver Bow, Montana, from 1980 to 1984, and beginning in June of 1984, Patrick joined the Montana Power Company legal staff, eventually becoming Chief Litigation Counsel for the Montana Power Company and Touch America. Patrick also worked with the law firm of Poore, Roth & Robinson, P.C., before forming the Fleming & O'Leary firm.
